Meet Abgent – antibodies guiding research on human health

This week we’ve been talking to Abgent, based in San Diego, California. Abgent is truely global, with facilities in Suzhou, China, and offices in the UK and China. The company also has distributors that span the world, including Europe, North and South America, Asia Pacific and Australia.
Abgent was founded in San Diego, California in 2001 for the purpose of providing antibodies and related reagents in response to the sequencing of the human genome. The founding team consisted of scientists from Becton Dickinson, Pfizer, and The Scripps Research Institute.
Abgent now is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of antibodies for biological research and drug discovery. In October 2011, the company was acquired by WuXi AppTec, a leading global contract research and development services provider serving the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries. This acquisition ensured significant resources to back the company’s mission of providing services and products of exceptional quality for the worldwide research community and pharmaceutical industry.
Abgent antibodies are selected for the study of cancer, stem cells, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic syndrome, immunology, apoptosis, autophagy, and other categories related to cell health. In addition, Abgent offers dedicated services including custom antibody development, custom peptide synthesis and custom protein expression to its clients with specific needs.
The company manufactures its own antibodies, and will only release antibodies it has developed that have passed detailed verification for performance, including testing against positive and negative controls, and positive results across multiple biologically relevant cell lines.
WuXi AppTec has 8,000 employees, 200 of which work for Abgent. The company’s value proposition is ‘Discovery Demands It™’. The company understands that its antibodies are used in important experiments guiding research on human health, and says that it will not compromise its standards for product quality because lives, careers, and the integrity of scientific inquiry are at stake.
