In this blog:

  • Which institutions are citing the most reagents in genetics research publications?
  • What geographic trends are we seeing?
  • Download data on the top 50 genetics research institutions

Using our citation collection tech we can understand how researchers are using products in the scientific literature. This information powers our market data services, for analysis into life science research trends, and a reagent search engine to help scientists find the right reagent.

Tracking reagent use: a window into experimental activity

Today we delve into our data on life science product citations in genetics research publications (focusing on antibodies, proteins and ELISA Kits) to explore experimental activity, and identify those particularly active institutes.

Following the 2025 CiteAb Award ‘Antibody Supplier succeeding in Genetics Research’, which you can read about here, we wanted to continue our focus on Genetics Research  through this analysis.

Read on to inform and target your marketing and sales campaigns or find your next collaborator.

Top Genetics Research Institutions

To give a top level summary, between 2019-2024 the top three institutions by citation share were as follows:

Top genetics research institutions for ELISA Kits, Antibodies and Proteins

Below, we drill down further into these three reagent types and the top institution trends and those featuring beyond the top five.

Spotlight on Antibody Use in Genetics Research Institutions

Antibodies are critical reagents in genetics research – from protein expression profiling to functional studies and more.

So, which institutions were citing many research antibodies in their publications? And are these institutions on your radar for your product campaigns?

Chinese Genetics Research Institutions – Growing Leaders

One standout trend that we noticed through this analysis was the growing share of Chinese Institutions – referencing more antibodies year on year in genetics research publications.

Universities like Sun Yat-sen, Zhejiang, Fudan, and Nanjing have shown remarkable growth overall. Overall, 8 of the top ten institutions were based in China between 2019-2024.

Citation trends for two Chinese institutions in the top 5 by antibody use in Genetics Research. Both show a jump in citations which coincides with the COVID years.

None of these institutions have had linear trajectories, seeing shifts year on year (both positive and negative), yet they now all appear in the top five spots in 2024. A couple of these top Chinese institutions have however seen decline from 2023-2024 – we will be watching the data to see if this continues.

This trend of strong growth in China is one we are seeing more generally in the life sciences – reflecting broader investment and expansion in China’s research output.

US and Europe Genetics Research Institutions still show strong research activity

Other Countries where institutes in the top 100 list were based included the US, Netherlands, Canada, Japan, the UK, Sweden, Denmark, France and Germany – demonstrating broad global research output.

Several well known US institutions that you may expect to see excel in this space did indeed show strong research citation counts for antibodies.

Featuring prominently were Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Texas. We did note, however, that many have seen relative decline in share.

The University of Harvard is a notable exception, still ranking in the top three in 2024, and showing a growing citation share over the past three years.

Focusing on the top 20 in 2024, 5 US institutions and one German Institution featured: Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum. This institute could certainly be one to watch, seeing impressive growth in 2024.

Other non-US institutions ranking highly between the years 2019-2024 by citation share included the University of Cambridge (UK), the University of Toronto (Canada) and the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden).

These well established organisations have maintained relatively stable and strong presences and are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Smaller, more specialised institutions featuring in the top 50 overall included: Beckman Research Institute, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine.

Beyond Antibodies: Broader Reagent Usage Patterns in Genetics Research Institutes

Top-level observations:

  • Institutions performing well by antibody citation count often also lead in ELISA kit use.
  • The protein reagent market paints a slightly different picture — US institutions dominate more clearly here.

Focusing on the top antibody users in genetics research, we found that many of these Chinese universities, including Sun Yat-sen, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, and Peking, perform very well across both antibody and ELISA kit markets.

Major US players like Harvard, University of Texas, and University of California, San Diego are also present in the top ranks for Antibodies and ELISA Kits, although they are generally positioned below these Chinese Institutions.

Interestingly, while prominent, Chinese institutions did not hold the very top spots for Proteins.

US institutions, notably Harvard, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Stanford, take the clear top positions in Proteins.
