CiteAb specialises in collecting reagent information from the scientific literature, giving insight on research trends, life science company share, and markets to watch.
Back in 2017, we shared that we were collecting life science data beyond the use of antibodies. The lipid market is part of our broader biochemicals market data, one of the six reagent types we now collect data on.
In our first look at the market, we highlighted the top lipid suppliers. Today we share how has the lipid market changed since 2016, and which reagent suppliers you should be watching currently.
Lipid Reagent Market Size
The insight we shared in 2017 covered over 6700 citations for lipid use from academic research papers, covering over twenty different suppliers.
Fast forward to 2025, and our data now paints a more detailed picture of market shifts, supplier performance, and the expanding role of lipids in research fields such as lipidomics, drug development, and membrane biology. Overall, we have data on over 50 suppliers and over 70k citations.
Market Leaders in Lipid Supply
MilliporeSigma: A consistent market leader
Topping the charts for global lipid supply in 2016 we saw MilliporeSigma, dominating with a massive 70 per cent share. The company had a portfolio of over 1700 lipid products, which it aimed to grow as research in the field of lipidomics advances.
Upon revisiting the data for this analysis, we found that MilliporeSigma impressively remains the market leader. We have seen their share dip below 70% as of 2023 – yet despite this slight decline, the company maintains a commanding presence in the lipid space.
Avanti Polar Lipids: Steady Growth and a Strong Reputation
The second largest supplier of lipid products globally is Avanti Polar Lipids, founded by Walter A. Shaw over fifty years ago in 1967. Shaw is widely recognised as one of the leading authorities on lipid synthesis, manufacturing, research and analysis. Avanti Polar Lipids held the second largest share in the global market, with a portfolio of over 2000 unique lipid products, in 2016. They have since become Avanti Research.
Our latest data reveals that Avanti Research has continued to grow, with an increase in share between 2022 and 2023. With increasing citations, Avanti remains a crucial player in lipid research and development.
Emerging Competitors to Watch
Back in 2016 Rhys, Product Manager at CiteAb, commented:
“The lipid market is dominated by a small number of suppliers, with the top three (so 14 per cent of all lipid suppliers) holding over 90 per cent of all global lipid citations. This is not dissimilar to the pattern we see in the antibody market, where 90 per cent of antibody citations are supplied by 15 per cent of antibody suppliers.
“All of the top ten most cited products in the lipid market in 2016 (and, in fact, overall) are provided by MilliporeSigma, and it will be interesting to see whether the company can maintain its significant share of total citations, or even grow it as research in this field advances.”
While the market remains concentrated, we have seen other suppliers making significant strides. The top three accounted for around 80% of the market share in 2023, showing the increasing competition in the space. Here’s a couple of suppliers to watch:
- Thermo Scientific has consistently grown its share year on year, establishing itself as a key supplier to watch in the lipid space.
- MedChemExpress has shown an impressive trajectory, expanding its presence in the lipid market through strong citation growth. They moved into third position in 2023 for the first time.
We will be interested to see if these companies can continue their trajectories.
