  • Three key takeaways from our antibody supplier share data
  • How can you analyse market share data?
  • Download data on the top ten antibody companies in 2023!

At CiteAb, we collect reagent information from the scientific literature in order to identify and understand market trends and research reagent use.

We’ve just released our latest Market Insights Datasets, focusing on Supplier Share across reagent markets!

The Market Insights Package is one of our data products comprising four structured, quantitative datasets: Top products, Countries, Research areas and Company share trends.

We currently provide Market Insight packages for research ELISA Kits, Growth Factors, Antibodies and Biochemicals, but can create them for all reagent types we collect data on.

In this blog we are focusing only on the RUO antibody company share release from the Market Insights package, a dataset covering over 295 antibody suppliers and over 2 million citations.

Read on as we share some interesting takeaways, analysis ideas and a data download!

Three research antibody market share trends

1. The top three antibody supplier have led for several years

From our Antibody Market Insight dataset we found that the top three companies have impressively remained the same once again in 2023, in spite of many other companies successfully growing their share.

These leading antibody companies, supporting many researchers with their products, were:

  • Abcam – with an antibody market share of ~20%
  • Cell Signaling Technology – with an antibody market share ~19%
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific, with their Invitrogen Antibodies brand – antibody market share ~12%

We have previously analysed antibody supplier share over on our blog, finding that Abcam and Cell Signaling Technology have been vying for that top spot in recent years. In 2023 our data shows that their market share remains very close to call.

2. A change in the top five ranked suppliers

We also noted increasing competition in the antibody market, shown by a number of companies increasing their share of citations.

A few examples of companies with impressive growth trajectories include Invitrogen Antibodies, BioLegend and Jackson ImmunoResearch.

We have previously noted BioLegend’s impressive growth in citation share on our blog. This trajectory is only continuing, and in 2023 resulted in a rise in rank to fifth place in the antibody market.

They have replaced Santa Cruz Biotechnology in this spot, the first time the top five companies have changed in nine years.

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s brand Invitrogen Antibodies, similarly, have been edging closer to the top two market leaders year on year. Although their rank hasn’t changed in 2023, we will be interested to see if they can continue this growth moving forward and challenge the top two.

Jackson ImmunoResearch, a secondary antibody market leader, have also seen growth in the overall market.

3. Consistent leaders in the secondary antibody market

When we look specifically at the secondary market, the leading companies differ from the overall market. Interestingly, the top three companies in 2023 have remained consistent for the last five years. They were:

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific with their Invitrogen Antibodies brand- ~40% secondary antibody market share
  • Jackson ImmunoResearch – ~13% secondary antibody market share
  • Abcam ~12% secondary antibody market share

Three ideas for antibody market analysis

Have these trends piqued your interest? There’s loads of really interesting analysis you can carry out with supplier share data to inform your decision making. Some of this analysis could also be applied to data you may have internally.

Here’s three ideas for your team:

1. Benchmark your performance

Delving into trends in company citations over time can help you to position yourself in the market, and spot key competitors who you may not have been aware of. You could then see how your trajectory compares over time.

2. Identify key trends

Another way you could use this data is to discover important trends. Doing so can help identify missed opportunities – should you be dedicating your sales efforts into the secondary market? How is the overall market changing – are suppliers from a certain region rising up the ranks, or those specialising in particular research areas?

3. Develop an informed company strategy

Understanding the overall market can help you to navigate a highly crowded space of around 300 vendors, by quantitatively seeing the impact of changes to your strategy on your market share.

Here’s some more ways our datasets for products, research areas and countries can be utilised across your company.
