The biochemicals market is changing…
Hello – today I’m going to be talking about one of the datasets I look after – our biochemicals dataset.
This particular dataset has significantly increased in size with almost 200,000 citations over 400,000 products, from fifty suppliers. It’s a fluid market and today I’m going to take a look at the major suppliers and any changes that are taking place in their claims to market share.
I have carried out today’s analysis by looking at over 140,000 citations in the biochemicals market from over the past ten years from 2009 until the present day.
MilliporeSigma is by far the biggest player in the biochemicals market, with 78.61% of the total citations for the last ten years. This is followed up by Tocris (a part of BioTechne) with 5.02% and Selleck Chemicals with 4.09%.
However, our most recent data suggests that the market is shifting. MilliporeSigma’s citation share for 2018 dropped quite significantly to 73.76% – although the company still maintains a really large margin in this market, far larger than any one company sees in other markers such as research antibodies. Other smaller suppliers are looking to challenge MilliporeSigma – Tocris has slightly gained market share compared to last year, and Selleck is doing remarkably well with a decent increase.
Other suppliers in the top ten are also achieving growth in this market – Avanti Polar Lipids (now distributed by MilliporeSigma) and Abcam both gained. Others, such as Cayman, Cambridge Isotope Labs and Cell Signaling Technology have maintained a steady share of the market.
There are a few suppliers in this market which appear to be struggling to maintain their position. Santa Cruz was on an upward trend between 2009 and 2015, but has since seen a gradual decline in market share, and Enzo also saw an increase until 2013 before a decline again by 2018.
Our data for the biochemicals market demonstrates how quickly it is changing and how much impact small, growing companies like Selleck can have on the biggest players.
I will be really interested to see how trends in this market continue over the next few years. Will the next decade see more of the small suppliers grow and claim further share of the market from companies like MilliporeSigma, or will the big players begin to fight back?
