In this blog:

  • Analysis covers over 46,500 citations giving unparalleled insight
  • MilliporeSigma claims the lions share with 60% of citations
  • BioLegend’s share of this market has doubled since 2016

Previously when I have talked about our protein dataset here on our blog, I have focused on the companies currently leading the market. Today I am going to be looking at the same data, but I will be talking about not the current market leaders but the up and coming players in this sector – those companies with significant growth trajectories that we should be keeping a close eye on.

To produce this analysis I have looked at our protein data for the past ten years, from 2010 to 2019. This covers over 46,500 citations and gives an unparalleled insight into this market in a global context.

In my last analysis of our protein market data I highlighted that MilliporeSigma claims the lions share with 60% of citations, followed by R&D systems with just under 17%, and Peprotech with 13%.

However, over the last three years, both MilliporeSigma and R&D Systems have made market share losses. Which companies do these giants need to be watching come up behind them?

First up I want to highlight BioLegend, which was founded in June 2002. In 2010 the company did not have any citations in the protein market at all, but following year on year growth since 2011 it is today the 6th largest supplier, with 3.81% of the citation share.

BioLegend’s share of this market has doubled since 2016 and shows no signs of slowing. It is definitely therefore well placed to claim further market share from the lead suppliers, and they might want to keep an eye on its positioning and marketing of its protein products.

Other companies that have made gains include Abcam, from 0.28% in 2010 up to 2.86% in 2019, and Sinobiological with an increase from 2010 figures of 0.05% to 1.47% in 2019. While neither of these is as fast-paced as that demonstrated by BioLegend, both have maintained growth trajectories and continue to gain market share.

I also want to give a mention to New England Biolabs and Promega. For New England Biolabs there has been very little change in market share, this is a steady market position without much growth or loss. Promega, on the other hand, has seen fluctuations with its citation share increasing over the past ten years, but with some years also seeing a decline. It will be interesting to see how these companies fare in a few more years.

Today I am giving away the data for the last ten years for the five suppliers in the proteins market that I think you should be keeping an eye on. You can use this data to see how each has progressed in this market, or if you’d like a deeper analysis of our global protein dataset please contact me and I’d be happy to help you.
