AbD Serotec becomes Bio-Rad

You might have noticed that AbD Serotec recently started trading as Bio-Rad. We caught up with the antibody team from Bio-Rad to find out more.
Hi. Can you tell us a bit about Bio-Rad and AbD Serotec?
We have an ISO9001 certified antibody production facility in Kidlington, near Oxford, UK. This facility supports our global distribution centres. Our ISO 9001 certified laboratories in Puchheim, near Munich in Germany are home to our unique HuCAL® custom monoclonal generation services.
AbD Serotec was founded in 1980 as Serotec, a family business commercialising research antibodies sourced from academic partners. In 1990 the company established its own manufacturing laboratory in Kidlington near Oxford, UK, producing ready-made antibodies for research areas including immunology, neuroscience, cell biology, cancer and veterinary sciences, together with large and small scale custom antibody production and conjugation services. Serotec was acquired by MorphoSys AG in 2006, and combined with Oxford Biotechnology, Biogenesis, and Antibodies-by-Design to create the AbD Serotec brand.
In January 2013, AbD Serotec was acquired by Bio-Rad, and the company began trading as AbD Serotec, a Bio-Rad company. Just over three years later on May 17, 2016, AbD Serotec fully transitioned into the Bio-Rad brand, changing its name to Bio-Rad.
Bio-Rad now offers a dedicated antibody website engineered to meet the specific needs of researchers who use antibodies.
So with the name change, does the company’s service to customers change?
Both AbD Serotec and Bio-Rad have a natural affinity in key applications such as western blotting and flow cytometry. The combined product offering will provide our customers with a unique range of key instrumentation and associated antibodies and reagents, all from a single brand so we will be able to better serve our customers.
While we have a new name and website address, everything else remains the same. The quality content, products, and expert advice that we provide will not change.
Customers can expect the same great service as they have always had. We will continue to direct our efforts towards providing useful, high-quality products that advance scientific discovery and improve healthcare.
Will the areas the company specialises in remain the same?
Our key research areas are immunology, cancer, and veterinary sciences with emphasis on western blotting and flow cytometry as primary research applications. We also have expertise in traditional and recombinant antibody generation and production services.
Through our custom HuCAL®monoclonal antibody generation service we deliver antibodies in as little as 8 weeks with greater than 90% success. We will continue to invest in these key research areas.
So what makes Bio-Rad antibodies different to those produced by other companies?
At Bio-Rad we are committed to the success of our customers when using our antibodies. This involves extending our expertise before our customers place an order, empowering them to choose the right antibody for their needs as well as assisting with their experimental design.
Our support continues after their purchase through assay optimisation and troubleshooting with our online application specific resources or one-to-one conversations with our technical support team or account managers. When you purchase an antibody from Bio-Rad, you get more than just the antibody.
In addition, we listen to the concerns that life science researchers face so that we can provide quality products that specifically meet their needs.
For instance, we received significant feedback from researchers who were struggling to find reliable, high-quality western blotting antibodies.
