Welcome to the Top 100 series for 2026!

In this blog, we’re digging into the Top 100 most-cited Bioactive Small Molecules in life science research over the past year – surfacing the products and vendors supporting a huge share of the field’s experimental work.

Data & Methodology

Data collection methodology

Through the development of patent-protected text mining technology, we have amassed information on tens of thousands of bioactive small molecules. Our biochemicals database in its entirety covers nearly 3 million products from over 300 suppliers.

We specifically focus on citation counts: a measure of how frequently a product appears in peer-reviewed, published research. This data helps researchers see what their peers are reaching for, and gives suppliers a leading indicator of future demand as well as insight into past research activity.

This Top 100 analysis draws from the previous year’s worth of data, across all suppliers, ranking bioactive small molecule products by citation count.

The Bioactive Small Molecule Suppliers Supporting a Significant Volume of Research

Growing competition at the top of the bioactive market

Leading the Top 100 rankings were MilliporeSigma. Their products claimed 40% of spots, demonstrating their support of a large volume of research.

We’d previously flagged MedChemExpress as a company to watch. They’ve certainly seen growth in the bioactive space, doubling their presence in the Top 100 to claim 22 products in the dataset.

Selleck Chemicals held the third most products in the rankings.

Beyond these 3 vendors, the rankings saw dedicated bioactive-compound specialists sitting alongside larger life science reagent companies.

We noted growth in the number of suppliers making the Top 100: 15 compared to the 13 that featured when we analysed our data last year.

China-founded or China-based companies also saw a growing prescence, a signal that this region continues to succeed in the global reagent market.

Cancer-associated compounds, epigenetic modifiers and cocktail inhibitors are strongly represented in the Top 100

Firstly, the prevalence of protease inhibitor cocktails in the Top 100 jumped out. With 14 featuring, these fundamental lab tools continue to support a significant amount of research alongside more specialist compounds.

Expanding out, we saw epigenetics, ferroptosis, and stem cell research tools all carved out solid representation too.

Epigenetic inhibitors included 5-Azacytidine,  5-Aza-2′-deoxycytidine (DNMT inhibitors), and Vorinostat (SAHA) (an HDAC inhibitor) all sitting in the top 30, plus others.

Looking at ferroptosis and stem cell research tools, we found that clusters of supporting products ranked. This suggests labs are buying complete toolkits rather than single compounds. Examples included:

  • Y-27632 (ROCK inhibitor), CHIR99021 (GSK3/Wnt activator), and A 83-01 (TGF-β inhibitor), tools used in stem cell research.
  • The Ferrostatin-1 (inhibitor) paired with Erastin (inducer) used to study ferroptosis – iron-driven cell death.

Bioactive Compounds to Watch

Cancer drugs seeing a second lease of life

Topping the Top 100 this year was Regorafenib, supplied by Selleck Chemicals. This is a repurposed targeted cancer therapy that appeared in the Top 10 three separate times from different suppliers.

This points to a broader theme running through the data: the continued rise of multi-kinase inhibitors that started as cancer treatments and have found a second wind as research tools.

In Regorafenib’s case, the drug is primarily used to treat primary liver cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumours and bowel cancer. [1]

Other widely cited inhibitors in the Top 100 included Dasatinib and Sunitinib.

Researchers may be using these reagents, sold as research-grade small molecule inhibitors, for the study of resistance mechanisms, signalling research in cell/animal models, target validation and more.

FAQs

How is the Top 100 Bioactive Small Molecules list compiled?

We build the Top 100 list by analysing our database of life science publications for citations of bioactive small molecules. Products are ranked by their share of citations across the past year.

How often is the Top 100 Bioactive Small Molecules list released?

This analysis is published annually. You can find last year’s edition, the 2025 Top 100 Cited Bioactive Small Molecules Analysis, here.

What’s the difference between sales data and citation data for bioactive small molecules?

Sales figures remain locked inside each individual company’s own records, while citation data covers the entire market. Scientists commonly use citation data to inform future purchasing, which is why citation trends give an outlook on where the market is going.

Why do citation counts matter for marketing, product development, and benchmarking of bioactive small molecules?

Citation data shows exactly how researchers are putting bioactive small molecules to use. This equips product teams with actionable insight when building pipelines or refining catalogues, supports benchmarking across the full market, and enables trend-driven sales and marketing campaigns.
