In this blog:

  • Which companies are supplying widely used growth factors, supporting researchers in their work?
  • Which growth factors are most cited by scientists?
  • Which suppliers should you be watching in the growth factor market?

Welcome to the second blog in the top 100 research reagent series, where we share our analysis of the most used products and brands in life science research from the last year by collecting reagent citations from the scientific literature.

A part of our broader protein reagent market dataset, the cytokines and growth factor database covers products ranging from members of classic families of growth factors like EGF, TGF and FGF to cytokines such as interleukins and TNF.

This data covers 125 reagent suppliers with citations from around 1200 institutions.

Today we’re sharing with you data on the most cited RUO growth factors of 2023 to help you drill into research trends and leading companies in the space. Here’s what you can expect to find:

  • 11 different reagent companies supplied growth factors in the top 100 cited list
  • PeproTech, R&D Systems and MilliporeSigma led as the most used brands
  • EGF and FGF products were widely popular

Which are the leading growth factor & cytokine companies?

By understanding which companies are providing widely used products, you can identify growth factor market leaders and benchmark performance.

Overall, 11 different companies featured in the top 100 cited growth factors market dataset. In comparison, our analysis last year covering the top 100 growth factors from 2020-2022 saw 15 suppliers appear.

The company who provided the most referenced growth factor products in this dataset was PeproTech

PeproTech were acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific in January of 2022; we commented on this acquisition and what it could mean for Thermo Fisher and PeproTech’s market positioning on our blog. We have also explored PeproTech’s growth in the US growth factor market, in a separate analysis.

Potentially showing the impact of these factors, PeproTech now supplies an impressive 42 of the top 100 cited growth factors.

Their growth in this space could also account for fewer suppliers appearing in the top 100.

Our data from 2020-2022 saw R&D Systems and MilliporeSigma vying for the top spot, with R&D leading with 32 of the top 100 most cited growth factors.

These two suppliers now hold positions two and three respectively. Their presence in this current dataset showcases continued support for scientists carrying out research with growth factors.

In fact, R&D Systems have grown the number of growth factor reagents they supply in the top 100. They now have 33 products appearing.

Which growth factor suppliers should you be watching?

Inform market research by understanding which brands are growing their growth factor citation share.

When we turn our eye to companies growing the number of cited products in the top 100, MedChemExpress caught our attention as a supplier to watch. They have risen up this growth factor market dataset to now appear in fourth position.

We have previously predicted growth for this company over on our blog and speculated on whether they’d be able to replicate the success they saw in the Chinese bioactive market.

The top 100 cited growth factor data indicates that they have indeed grown in the growth factor space. Their rising share in the Chinese growth factor market could partly account for their success in this dataset.

Other suppliers featuring in this growth factor market dataset include Novoprotein and Sino Biological, with one and two products respectively.

These products all appear in the top 80 cited growth factors.

We have previously commented on both of these companies’ increasing share in the growth factor, and wider protein reagent market. They could certainly be ones to watch.

Which growth factor products are highly cited by scientists?

Data on reagent use can help inform product development, identify growth factor market trends and direct marketing and sales efforts.

The most cited growth factor by scientists in published work in 2023 was (100-18B) Recombinant Human FGF-basic (154 a.a.) from PeproTech.

In fact, we found many products in the top 100 were Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) and Epidermal growth factors (EGF), as we may have expected. These growth factor reagents are widely used in research spanning wound healing, tumorigenesis and embryogenesis [1].

We also noticed that the IL-6 family of cytokines were popular reagents.

Seeing widespread use outside of these families included neurotrophin growth factors like NGF and BDNF and the PDGF family.

Last time, we commented on the prolific nature of Wnt-3a proteins in the top 100. This year, only three appeared in the top 100.

Wrap-up: The data behind the analysis and downloading the top 100

For this analysis, we took a specific look at the growth factor and cytokine data within our broader protein market dataset. The entirety of this dataset covers growth factors, enzymes, hormones, serums, toxins and more, which includes over 800k products and 270k citations.

In order to generate this data, we use unique AI-driven data mining technology combined with extensive human reviewing to identify and understand product use from the scientific literature.
