  • Which research areas have the most antibody citations in Japan?
  • What are the leading institutions in Japan by antibody use?
  • How does the Japanese antibody market compare to China and the US?

Japan has caught our attention recently as the fourth largest research antibody market, behind China, the US and Germany.

You can look back on our blog to learn more about the leading suppliers we found in our Japanese antibody market research report in 2022. Today, we were intrigued to see what we could discover about the top research areas and institutions in Japan in order to understand more about antibody use in this important market.

This analysis can provide interesting insight for researchers looking to work in or collaborate with groups in Japan, and key intelligence for suppliers in this valuable market.

We uncovered one leading research area with lasting influence in the Japanese antibody market, and some similarities in research area trends with the Chinese antibody market. For institution data, five large and respected institutions unsurprisingly topped the list as the biggest antibody users.

What data did we use for this analysis?

For this analysis, we drilled down into our antibody citation data, which covers over 7 million products, 335 suppliers, 2.5 million peer reviewed citations from open access and subscription journals and around 200,000 preprint citations.

Our antibody data can give a depth of insight into research areas and institutions as we showcase in this blog, as well as further breadth in insight into data on senior authors, published year and more.

By looking further into which institutions and which research areas are producing the most citations, we can draw a picture of where antibodies are being used and how they are being applied. Are certain universities citing more antibodies than others? Are certain research fields growing in popularity in Japan?

What were the top research areas by antibody use in Japan?

By analysing our citation data, we found that cancer research is the most popular research area in Japan and has remained so for the last decade. This goes to demonstrate a lasting influence of this research area.

Delving into the percentage share, we discovered that cancer research had 21.52% of antibody citations in 2021. Citations in cancer research have risen steadily over the years, although we have seen a slight plateau in more recent years, shown below.

This research area is also highly popular in the top two antibody markets China and the US. It claims over a quarter of citation share in China, and is the second most popular research area in the US, behind Immunology and Microbiology. On the whole, Japan sees more similar trends to China than the US in our research area data.

Further resources: Last year, we took a look at the leading antibody products in cancer research, across all geographical markets.

Other highly cited research areas in Japan are Immunology and Microbiology, and Cell Biology. These take positions two and three, with a citation share of 15.3% and 13.47% respectively.

We found that citation share for Cell Biology has increased since 2011. Immunology and Microbiology, however, has not grown or lost citation share, instead seeing fluctuations around a consistent level over the years. In contrast, this market has been growing steadily in the US over the past five years.

As to be expected, COVID-19 has seen an increase in citations over the past few years, increasing from 0%, to 0.33% in 2020, to 1.95% in 2021. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues, or plateaus in the years following the pandemic.

At CiteAb we curate research area data by looking at the journals the citation is from and assigning a research area. To collect the citation, we text mine publications using a combination of machine learning and thorough human reviewing to ensure accuracy.

Which institutions in Japan are producing the most antibody citations?

Within our comprehensive antibody database, we are able to drill down into which Japanese institutions are the key antibody users.

We were not surprised to find that the top five institutions were from some of the largest cities in Japan. Below we break down which were the leading institutions, and their share of antibody citations in Japan in 2022.

Many key antibody users in institutions around the world, such as the top five we outline for Japan, use the CiteAb search engine to find products that work for their experiments.

Our reagent search engine ranks products, like research antibodies, by the number of citations, and provides further experimental information for researchers to evaluate before choosing a product. Japan had the third highest user base by country over the past year, reflecting their respective market sizes and antibody use.
