CiteAb used AI-driven data collection technology combined with human reviewing to identify and understand reagent use from the scientific literature; find out more about our market data services here. This analysis looks at our multiplex immunoassay data.

Today, we are sharing what our reagent citation data can show us about the growing multiplex immunoassay market, a technique that enables in-depth analysis of molecular and cellular interactions.

By drilling into our citation data for this product type, we uncover popular products, leading companies and insights into institutional use.

Multiplex Immunoassays: An introduction

Multiplex immunoassays measure multiple analytes simultaneously in a single sample. This is typically achieved using suspension based systems or planar/spatial based systems – terminology we use when examining research use later in this analysis.

Reducing the time, cost, and resource required for individual experiments, the benefits of these assays cannot be understated. Critically, multiplex immunoassays enable study into areas such as cellular interactions, tissue micro-environments and tumour-immune interactions, facilitating work in the growing spatial biology field and more.

The size of the multiplex immunoassay market is growing

Back in 2021, we analysed the multiplex immunoassay market on our blog and found that the industry had been growing. Bringing our analysis up to date, we found that this trend has continued.

The number of multiplex immunoassay kits citations has almost doubled since 2019 – equating to a compound annual growth rate of ~13%.

There has certainly been a lot of interest in the potential power of multiplex kits, but this data shows that the interest is translating into research findings – i.e. citations in the scientific literature.

Reflecting this research demand, we also noted increasing competition in the market.  Back in 2016, we found 11 cited multiplex suppliers. In 2021, 19 appeared in our data. In 2023, 33 cited suppliers are in our database.

Suppliers are responding to the multiplex immunoassays research need

In light of this growing demand and competition in the market, who are the current market leaders? Have they changed over the years?

Drilling down into our citation data, we found that R&D Systems held the greatest citation share in the multiplex immunoassay market, with nearly 20% of citations in 2023.

Coming in as the second and third most cited supplier were MilliporeSigma and BD Biosciences.

When we last analysed the market in 2021 we found that MilliporeSigma led. You can read the full blog on suppliers leading in the multiplex immunoassay market here to see how the market has evolved.

Several companies have also improved their position in this burgeoning market. Some examples that caught our eye were BioLegend and Meso Scale Diagnostics, who have both increased their multiplex immunoassay market share to exceed 10% in recent years.

We commented on BioLegend’s growth in 2021, predicting that they could challenge the top three vendors in the future. They have certainly been closing the gap, and if their current trajectory continues this could come to pass.

Types of multiplex immunoassay generating the greatest research demand and institutional insights

When we turned our attention to assay types, we found that Suspension based products were the most popular amongst scientists in cited work.

In 2023, around 61.55% of Multiplex Immunoassay citations were suspension (e.g. Bead or Particle/Luminex) based, and 33.10% were from Planar/Spatial separation based products such as Microarray Systems.

The most cited multiplex immunoassay product listed on CiteAb is R&D System’s ‘Proteome Profiler Mouse Cytokine Array Kit, Panel A (code: 761071), a membrane-based sandwich assay which has nearly 500 citations and can detect 40 proteins simultaneously.

Institutions citing the most multiplex immunoassays in their publications were unsurprisingly from some of the big players across the globe:

  • Sun Yat-sen University (China)
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China)
  • Harvard University (USA)
