  • find out which company has got into the top 100 for the first time
  • and which company dominates the top 10.

We’re excited to be sharing with you today the first in our Top 100 series of posts which take a look back at our data for the previous year and provide insights into the products, companies and research leading in each reagent category. In this series, we cover the top 100 kits & assays, proteins, biochemicals, cell lines and lipids.

Today we’re focused on the top 100 antibodies of 2020, and will be looking at which suppliers have the best performing antibodies, at new suppliers in the top 100, and at any new products in the top 10 since last year’s report

Rhys Williams, CiteAb product manager, said: “We have been working hard to increase the number of antibodies we have data on over the past twelve months, and have also been working to continually ensure the exceptionally high quality of our data too.”

To carry out today’s analysis we have looked at hundreds of thousands of highly accurate 2020 citations for over 6 million antibodies.

From this, we can tell you that Cell Signaling Technology has maintained its leadership position, supplying the most antibodies in the top 100. However, the company’s overall number has declined slightly to 37, from 42 in 2019.

Rhys says: “Cell Signaling Technology is clearly still doing really well in the global antibody market. It will be interesting to watch whether the dip we see for 2020 is repeated again for 2021, or whether it is a one-off.”

The top three is rounded off with Abcam and Millipore Sigma, as in previous years. However, this year, Abcam adds five products to the top one hundred, more than any other company.  This success is further reflected in their position as the top antibody supplier in 2020.

We also see Millipore Sigma and Thermo Fisher Scientific add to the total number of products they have in the top one hundred – whereas Santa Cruz Biotechnology drops three products.

Proteintech enters the top one hundred for the first time this year, an appropriate success as the company celebrates its 20th anniversary. This is the only new supplier to join the ranks. The company has been doing well over previous years so this is an expected outcome given its recent trajectory.

The majority, 76%, of the antibodies in the top one hundred are primary antibodies, 24% are secondary. We also see 26 recombinant antibodies in the ranking.

When we look at the top ten the same antibodies feature in 2020 as in 2019, but in a different order. However, Cell Signaling Technology’s  Anti-rabbit IgG, HRP-linked Antibody (Cat# 7074) continues to maintain its position as the top cited antibody of the year. This antibody has maintained this position since 2017. The company’s products occupy seven of the top ten positions, with its Anti-mouse IgG, HRP-linked Antibody (Cat# 7076) being the biggest mover – now ranked 3rd in 2020 having been 9th last year.

One of Proteintech’s new additions to the top 100 is their GAPDH antibody (Cat# 60004-1-Ig) which was previously 414th in 2019, moving up quickly to be ranked 73rd in 2020. We now see ten anti-GAPDH antibodies feature in the top 100.  Today we are giving away the complete list of the 100 cited antibodies of 2020 for free if you sign up below.
