In this blog:
- We take a look at which suppliers are supporting the immunology field with their antibody, protein and biochemical reagents
- Which reagent suppliers are seeing significant growth in the field?
- Have we noticed any further trends in this research area and beyond?
With far-reaching impacts into auto-immune conditions, infectious diseases, allergies, right down into areas such as neurodegenerative diseases and oncology, immunology is full of important research. Effective reagents in this space are essential to support this work.
We were excited to attend AAI recently, and so we thought it the perfect time to explore our immunology citation data in more detail.
In this blog, we take a look at our immunology research area data for proteins, biochemicals and antibodies over the past five years. We find out which suppliers are supporting the field as both the leaders and ones to watch. Plus, we’re offering a free download of some of the data used for this analysis at the bottom of this blog.
Who are the leading antibody immunology suppliers?
Looking into our citation database revealed that the leading supplier supporting Immunology with their antibody products, taking in overall data for the past five years, was BioLegend. They possessed an impressive 18.2% of the market.
BioLegend are particularly strong in this specific research area; out of the 13 research areas for which CiteAb collects data, Immunology is the only area in which Biolegend holds the top position.
Joining BioLegend in the top three are Cell Signaling Technology and Abcam, who are also the top two antibody suppliers overall by market share. These two big players held a 15.69% and 14.24% share, respectively, showing significant contributions to the field.
Looking back over the past five years, we found these top suppliers have steadily increased their citation share for immunology antibodies. We did notice a slight drop for BioLegend in 2022 with Abcam taking the lead, however they retain their hold on the market overall.
We noted other leading suppliers in this market see the opposite trend. Invitrogen Antibodies were the market leaders in 2017 but have slowly lost share, demonstrating how a market can change in the span of just a few years. Similarly, Santa Cruz Biotechnology have consistently lost market share. Despite these trends, both suppliers still hold a strong position in the market, ranking as 5th and 6th respectively from our data in 2022.
Up-and-coming suppliers to keep an eye on include ABclonal and Genetex. For the first time, we saw ABclonal break into the top ten in 2022. Genetex remain outside the top ten, but their steady upward trajectory suggests they may enter the top ten in the future, both demonstrating increasing success in supporting immunology research.

Who are the leading immunology biochemical suppliers?
In the immunology market for biochemicals, we discovered that MilliporeSigma led overall, showing considerable efforts towards supporting the scientific community in their immunology research.
Interestingly, isolating data from only 2022 revealed that MilliporeSigma’s share in this research area decreased slightly to 40.86% in 2022, from 62.03% in 2017.
Rising suppliers in this field include Thermo Fisher Scientific and MedChemExpress. Both suppliers have seen considerable growth in their citation share in recent years, producing biochemical reagents that are being cited more by researchers in immunology. We will be interested to keep watching these changes to see if they gain ground on MilliporeSigma in the future.
Thermo Fisher now hold 28.96% of the market, up from 16.81% in 2017. MedChemExpress’ share has rocketed from a 0.35% share in 2017 to 5.15% in 2022. Interestingly, we noticed a similar positive growth trend for the cancer research area when we analysed this data in a previous blog.
Other suppliers of note in the top five in this area include Selleck Chemicals and BD Bioscience, with shares of 3-4% and 2-3% respectively, fluctuating around this level for several years.
Who are the leading protein suppliers in immunology?
Reflecting our findings for biochemicals, the immunology protein market has also been led by MilliporeSigma with an impressive citation share of 23.06%. This is a slight drop from their 33.54% share in 2017.
Taking the second spot is PeproTech, with 12.37% of the market. They have held this significant share fairly stably for six years now, demonstrating a strong hold in the market.
Interestingly, if we combine Thermo Fisher’s citation share with PeproTech (given ThermoFisher’s recent acquisition of the protein company) then we see this share boost to 21.25%, making them a strong competitor to MilliporeSigma.
Taking Thermo Fisher Scientific individually places them 4th overall with 9.21% of the market. We’ve noticed small year on year increases for Thermo Fisher, creeping up from 6.84% in 2017.
The third most cited protein supplier in this dataset was R&D Systems, with a strong 11.94% citation share. We have noticed a slight decrease in their share in the past few years, although this hasn’t impacted their position.
One supplier notably on the rise is Sino Biological, growing their citation share from 1.27% to 7.74%. A possible reason for this could be their success in producing COVID proteins quickly to meet market demands. In fact, they won our ‘Supplier Succeeding in Sars-CoV-2 Research’ Award in 2021 – you can read more about the CiteAb Awards here.
Another supplier on the rise is New England Biolabs, who have also been making incremental gains each year. They may be one to watch in the immunology space for the future.
We noticed this positive trend for New England Biolabs in the cancer research market through the analysis we shared on our blog a few months ago. We’ll be interested to examine further research areas beyond immunology and cancer research, to see if this trend extrapolates to more areas.
What data did we use for this analysis?
To carry out this analysis, we analysed our citation database which now covers over 13 million commercially available research reagents and 6 million citations.
To create this database, we developed industry-leading text mining technology (using both AI and extensive human reviewing to ensure the highest quality data) to identify product use from the scientific literature. We assign publications with research areas, and the citations from these assignments can be curated into specific datasets. We use these datasets in our blogs to drill down into particular areas as we have done here.
Publications are from both open-access, pre-prints and closed-access journals due to a number of partnerships we’ve built with publishers over the years, which you can read about here:
