  • Which regions are home to the top neuroscience institutions?
  • Download data on the top 50 neuroscience institutions!

Using our citation collection tech we can understand how researchers are using products in the scientific literature. This enables us to dissect global trends in research use.

With SfN 2024 around the corner, today we take a dive into our data on the leading institutions for neuroscience research by citation count.

  • Are you trying to reach the right researchers for your products?
  • Are you looking for new collaborators?
  • Are you performing market research?

If you’re curious about the neuroscience space and want insight into any of these questions, read on to learn more about the top 50 institutions.

Which are the top neuroscience institutions for research globally?

To determine the leading research neuroscience institutions, we analysed our citation data to find which establishments have used the most antibodies in neuroscience related work published in 2023. We used antibody citations as an unbiased and quantitative way to measure research output.

The top 10 neuroscience institutes featured many well-established names.

  • Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Asia
  • Sun Yat-sen University, Asia
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Asia
  • Zhejiang University, Asia
  • Nantong University, Asia
  • Fudan University, Asia
  • Nanjing Medical University, Asia
  • Harvard University, USA
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA
  • Capital Medical University, USA

You can freely download the top 50 institutes at the bottom of this blog.

By analysing citation data we can get a strong indicator of overall experimental activity, as well as insight into which institutes are using many neuroscience research products, making this a unique ranking.

Our analysis: trends in neuroscience research

Which regions are neuroscience research leaders?

Focusing on the top 10 neuroscience institutes overall, we found that Asia was strongly represented with eight of the top 10.

Zooming out slightly to the top 20, the US had five institutes featuring in 2023. Two European institutes appeared: University College London and Universitat Wurzburg.

Interestingly, if we look back at our citation data over the past ten years we have seen a big shift in the rankings in the top 10. In 2014, nine of the top 10 institutes by neuroscience antibody citations were in the US.

Overall, Asia has grown their research output to rise up the list over the years.

Neuroscience institutions to watch

When we looked at the leading neuroscience institutes overall, we saw that the difference in % share of citations between first and 10th position was only 0.73%. We also noted variations in citation counts in different years from the top institutes.

This goes to show that there are many players to watch in this field, and those further down the list are also contributing heavily to neuroscience research.

As previously mentioned, a key trend we picked up on was a number of institutes from Asia increasing their citation count in neuroscience research in recent years.

Notably Sun Yat-sen University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology caught our eye with their significant positive trajectories.

It is worth noting that growth was not exclusively limited to Asia. Those increasing their share in recent years just outside of the top 10 included: Chongqing Medical University, University College London and Universität Würzburg.

Will these institutions increase their focus on neuroscience and appear in the top 10 in the future?

Neuroscience specialists

When we looked at those institutes sitting just outside of our top 50 list we saw a range of neuroscience specialists and smaller institutes, with a higher representation from Europe and the US. These may be of interest for finding collaborators or customers. Here’s some examples:

  • Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin – rank 100, Germany
  • National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke – rank 98, USA
  • Universität Freiburg – rank 91, Germany
  • Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg – rank 63, Germany
  • Oregon Health & Science University – rank 90,  USA

Our citation data and reagent search engine

Over the past decade we have developed text mine technology, which we combine with extensive human reviewing, to identify product citations from the scientific literature.

Aside from using this citation data for life science market analysis, our data also powers a reagent search engine. You can use this as a life science product comparison tool, to evaluate products from hundreds of different suppliers.

Our tool is free to use, and you can try it out below to find your next neuroscience product:

Stay tuned for more institution rankings for different research areas!
